The Paraclete - John 14:1-27

Dear Wednesday Friends,
This week's text is from the Last Supper discourse. This context
adds great weight to Jesus' words since this is the last set of
teachings that He will give to His disciples.
The situation is heavy, difficult and tense.
Complications arise. John 14:1 tells us that the disciples are
troubled. Jesus has already told them that He will be leaving them
shortly and that they cannot follow. Furthermore, Jesus has responded
to Peter's statement of bravery by stating that Peter will disown/deny
Him three times before the rooster crows.
But Jesus is determined to bring some encouragement to His
disheartened followers. He is not leaving them alone for He will ask
the Father to send the _/Paraclete/_ ..."the Spirit of truth" (John
14:16-17).
_/Paraclete/_ is a difficult Greek word to translate. It originally
meant the one who was sent to come alongside of someone to assist them
legally. It has been variously translated as: Advocate, Helper,
Intercessor, Comforter and Counselor.
The coming of the Holy Spirit//_Paraclete_/ brings three blessings.
1. The blessing of teaching/truth (John 14:26a). The /_Paraclete_/
will teach us all things. Obedience to these teaching will bring us life.
2. The blessing of recall (John 14:26b). The _/Paraclete/_ will
remind us everything Jesus' taught. Faith is having confidence in the
validity of scriptures which grounds our lives in God's Word.
3. The blessing of peace (John 14:27.) The _/Paraclete/_ will
bring us deep peace. This kind of peace is experienced as we rely on
God even in the storms of life.
John 14:27 echoes John 14:1.."Do not let your hearts be troubled..."
Amidst the complications, difficulties, uncertainties, sickness,
depression and death...the _/Paraclete/_ is with us.
Thanks for your continued encouragement and prayers.
Blessings,
Tim
